Kolkata in the mid-50s. The extended Mazumdar family lives under one roof. Short of money, Arati decides to go against all conventions and look for a job. Against the wishes of her parents-in-law, she takes a job selling knitting machines. The job gives her a new dimension to her life, she is successful and becomes increasingly self-confident, which leads to further tensions within the family. „MAHANAGAR was the first film to focus on a woman. Her development, which begins when she takes up a job out of necessity, reflects the changes in society. This is shown with a sensitivity and lightness that is characteristic of Ray's entire oeuvre.“ (Aruna Vasudev) (gv)
